Classification of cavities and restorations

Cavities occur in different areas of teeth and each one has a specific management. This section covers the various types of cavities and the restorations given for them.

1. What are the types of lesions involved in tooth destruction?

Dental caries, Abrasion, Wear of tooth, Erosion, Fracture are the lesions that commonly cause destruction of teeth.

2. What are the sites of occurance of smooth surface cavities?

Smooth surface cavities occur on the axial rather the occlusal surface of the crown, more likely on the buccal and labial surfaces and the interproximal regions below the contact point.

3. How does smooth surface caries manifest initially?

Initially, smooth surface caries is manifested as a whitish area of decalcification on the enamel, scraping which reveals a soft enamel on the outer surface and becomes harder underneath.
